MBFM: gurus in civil society
“There is no status to the figure of the guru in liberal civil society. It has no religious, legal, or cultural basis. Therefore the relations between gurus and disciples, so-called, cannot be anything different form those between individuals related by social laws. Anyone who can’t work within that framework to deal with ‘ego’ is a dangerous fraud who shouldn’t be a teacher at all.
This kind of invitation to destructive behavior on the part of so-called gurus is thus a floating invitation to lunatics.”
YES, “There is no status to the figure of the guru in liberal civil society. It has no religious, legal, or cultural basis”.
Which means that in the US, guru-ing is totally unregulated by law. There is total power and zero accountablity for the powerholder.
Which is guaranteed to attract dangerous and harmful people to the role of guru, and also attract those who are unconsciously in the grip of power imbalance issues/masochism and sleepwalking right into the role of student.
At least psychotherapists have gone to school, taken exams and know that if they fuck up, someone can report them to their licensure board.
